Veteran’s Day is a day of honor and remembrance. As an act of paying respect, the Riverside National Cemetery annually hosts an event on Veteran’s Day (along with memorial day) for anyone to attend. Appropriately named, “A Flag For Every Hero” pays homage to those valiant lives lost by placing a flag on each grave. The 921 acre cemetery is completely decorated with American Flags within hours. Established in 2012, this incredible program is solely volunteer work from community members. Men and women alike gather to honor the heroes who have fallen. This event also attracts boy scouts and girl scouts to help with placing the flags. Veterans from wars such as Iraq and Vietnam also gather to honor their comrades. Although the event was supposed to last three hours, from 8am to 11am, within 40 minutes every grave was observed.
