On Saturday, December 16, the Martin Luther King High School (King) girls’ varsity basketball team competed in the extremely competitive Mustang Classic Tournament held at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Eastvale. They defeated Great Oak in the quarter finals, and went on to defeat a Troy team that makes the open division in CIF almost yearly in semi-finals, and CIF Champion and State finalist Los Osos in the Championship game to win it all. “The team coaches and I push them really hard and are really tough on them during practice, so it’s a joy to watch them be successful and rewarded for their dedication and hard work” reflected head coach and Spanish teacher, Jesus Martinez. Raya Smith, 10, one of the team captains, stated “despite not having our full team, everyone that played stepped up to the plate to help contribute to our win and tournament overall.” The other team captain, Aniyah Pewett also added, “Our effort is what made our win so significant. The coaches helped us and pushed us to get better and achieve that win.” For more details about the tournament, read Landi Negri’s article in the Press Enterprise.
