MEET THE TEAM
Ms. Birchak: Class Advisor
Ms. Birchak has been the newspaper advisor for three years and the journalism I teacher for two. She still considers herself a novice to the field of journalism, but embraces the challenges that each year brings and the lessons that she learns. She believes journalism plays an important role in a democratic society and pushes her students to find their voices both as students and as citizens.
Gabriela Aguirre, 12 : Editor-in-chief
Gabriela, known as Gabby, is a senior at Martin Luther King High School who has been a part of the newspaper staff for two years. She enjoys listening to music, reading, doodling, attending concerts, and taking photos on her free time. In the fall, she hopes to attend San Francisco State University. She is also a sole believer in the use of the oxford comma.
Ariana Sanchez, 11: Co-Editor-in-chief
Ariana is a junior at Martin Luther King High who has been a part of newspaper for two years and plans to be part of it for her remaining years in high school. As a result of taking reading and writing up as a hobby, this junior is considering to major in journalism in college. Aside from aspiring for the future, Sanchez is trying to what she can for now: living life as it comes, and preforming well in school so she can start applying for colleges when the time comes.
Julianne Alejos, 11: Staff writer
Julianne is a junior at Martin Luther King High School who is a new staff member this year. She enjoys reading, writing, baking, hanging out with friends, and traveling to new, exciting places. After high school, she hopes to attend a school out-of-state to study journalism.
Serena Diaz, 9: Staff writer
Serena is a freshman at Martin Luther King High School who is a new staff member this year.She enjoys watching and playing sports,hanging out with friends,watching movies,and spending time with family.In the next four years she hopes to achieve her goals which is getting a GPA of 3.0 or higher continuing with softball.
Ashley Emerson, 11: Staff writer
Ashley is a junior at Martin Luther King High School and a new member to the newspaper. She enjoys music (particularly the bands LANY and The 1975), reading, writing, photography, and the beach (she sort of wants to be a mermaid however that is a bit too optimistic). She has been on the track and field team for the past 2 years and plans on doing it again this year. She hopes to attend the University of Oregon once she graduates and study journalism. (Go Ducks!)
Shawkat Harb, 11: Staff writer
Shawkat is a Junior at Martin Luther King High School and is a new staff writer for the King Courier. He enjoys watching and playing basketball in his free time, as well as conditioning for the upcoming track and field season. By the end of the year he hopes to maintain a 4.1 G.P.A.
Kaila Maness, 9: Staff writer
Kaila is a freshman at Martin Luther King High School who is a new staff member to the King Courier. She enjoys reading, baking, taking photos, watching Riverdale, spending time with her animals, and hanging out with her friends in her free time. In the next four years, she plans to be successful enough to get accepted into a good college.
Nathan Ramirez, 11: Staff writer
Nathan is a Junior at Martin Luther King High School who just started writing for the newspaper. He is a proud Californian that passes his time watching and analyzing sports especially the Trojans, Lakers, Ravens, and San Francisco Giants. He enjoys listening to various types of music except country and classical. He hopes to attend Cal State Long Beach as a journalism major.
Nikko Rodriguez, 10: Staff writer
Nikko is a Sophomore at Martin Luther King High School and a new staff member of the King Courier. Being from Chicago, he is an avid sports fan. He enjoys watching the Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears, and Sox games. He currently has a 4.0 GPA and his goal is to one day attend Northwestern University.
Hayley Scamihorn, 9: Staff writer
Hayley is a freshman at Martin Luther King High School, she is also a new staff member of the King Courier Newspaper. She enjoys listening to music, cheerleading, watching Gossip Girl, hanging out with her friends and trying new things. In the next four years, she plans on achieving a 3.50 GPA.
Jonathon Schaffer, 11: Staff writer
Jonathon is a junior at Martin Luther King High School entering his second year with the King Courier Staff. He enjoys playing sports with his friends, as well as watching them. He loves the New England Patriots of the National football league and the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey league. Jonathon hopes to attend California State Long Beach and become a sports analyst after college.
Connor Sharp, 12: Staff writer
Connor is a senior at Martin Luther King High School who is in his second year as a staff writer of the King Courier Newspaper. Along with being a part of the newspaper, he is also a four member of the Cross Country team. He enjoys running, karate, reading, writing, and hanging out with his friends. After high school he plans to attend the Coast Guard Academy.

Owen is a freshman at Martin Luther King High School beginning his first year writing for the King Courier. He enjoys playing soccer as well as traveling with his team during season. He also enjoys listening to various artists such as, A$AP Rocky, Travis Scott, Amine, Kanye West, Lil Uzi Vert, A Boogie, and KYLE. Owen hopes to keep playing soccer in his future and attend Clemson University or Wake Forest University.
